Non-protein nitrogen determination of milk with the rapid MAX N exceed PLUS Dumas analyzer

Non-protein nitrogen (NPN) compounds are important constituents of milk products and serve as key indicators of quality and safety. Traditional methods for NPN determination rely on trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitation; however, TCA is highly corrosive and can damage metallic components, reducing the lifespan of critical parts in Dumas combustion analyzers (e.g. the metallic gripper arm in the rapid MAX N exceed PLUS analyzer).

This Application Note presents a robust and efficient method for quantifying NPN in milk using the rapid MAX N exceed PLUS Dumas analyzer, without reliance on TCA precipitation. With this method, laboratories can achieve results equivalent to the Kjeldahl method while benefiting from the speed, safety, and automation of Dumas technology.
