Clear batch assignment of individual workpieces by trace elements
Different stainless steels can be distinguished by the weight percentages of their alloying elements. Even elements that are only within the per mill range and below can influence the properties of the material and thus, its suitability for certain applications. These trace elements vary slightly depending on the batch.
In metal processing, many individual products are manufactured from the starting material as part of a mechanical production process. Information about the original material can be lost in the course of the process. Clear identification of stainless steels and error-free batch sorting are important for the safety and quality assurance of industrial products. This is because the more sensitive the target applications of the products produced, the more problematic mixed batches can become with slightly varying properties.
