Quantification of soil carbon with the soli TOC cube: The impact of sample weight and grain size

The demand for reliable soil carbon analysis is growing – driven by soil health monitoring, soil fertility assessment, climate mitigation efforts and the increasing use of soil carbon measurements for carbon credits.

But how much sample preparation is actually needed to achieve accurate and reproducible results? This Application Note investigates the impact of sample weight, grain size and sample homogeneity on the determination of soil carbon according to ISO 17505:2025.

Using the soli TOC® cube, two soils with different carbon contents were analyzed to determine TOC, ROC and TIC. 

The Application Note demonstrates how temperature-dependent carbon differentiation can enable efficient analysis without time-consuming sample pre-treatment or the use of acids.
