Elemental Analysis and TOC Forum 2025 - Recap

We recently wrapped up our 2025  Elemental Analysis and TOC Forum. Held at the Manchester Museum, this two-day event brought together experts and users to share knowledge and discuss new applications in elemental, environmental, and water analysis.

Day 1: Elemental Analysis

The forum kicked off with a welcome from Paul Wheeler, Elementar UK's Managing Director, followed up by Jon Metters, who gave a quick introduction to our product portfolio. The morning sessions featured several insightful presentations:

  • Moritz Kreinbihl, who joined us from our head office in Germany, discussed the role of CHNOS analysis in renewable feedstocks and fuels.
  • Adeniyi Aseperi from the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) shared his experiences of analysis using the vario MACRO cube.
  • Kate Flanagan from Saria Ltd discussed their use of elemental analysis for animal food products and water testing.

The afternoon comprised of a series of rotating sessions, which included a live lab demonstration of the vario MACRO cube for CHNS analysis at the University of Manchester. There was also a consumables workshop, led by Jan Hartwig, the head of our application lab in Germany, and a feedback session on what users need from their elemental analyzers. The day concluded with a software workshop led by Matt Mahoney and a session on IRMS applications by Mike Seed.

Day 2: TOC

The second day shifted focus to TOC and environmental applications. The sessions were as follows:

  • Rick Kirkpatrick from Northumbrian Water discussed the role of TOC in water testing.
  • Dr. James Rowson of Jacobs presented his work on interpreting organic deposits in a road development scheme in Greater Manchester.
  • Dr. Robert Sparkes from Manchester Metropolitan University presented his new research comparing TOC methods.
  • Jan Hartwig explored new uses for TOC analysis in battery recycling.
  • Calum Preece discussed TOC and TNb determination for surface and wastewater applications. The forum wrapped up with a session from Altus Science on the importance of TOC Calibration and Validation Standards.

It was good to network with people from similar fields and get to know more about their research and how they use their TOC/TN analyser. Likewise it was also nice meeting people from different backgrounds and geeting to know how they use the same equipment for vastly different applications

Meeting Attendee

We would like to share a huge thank you to everyone who attended and presented, you made the forum a success. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
